Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. Janie Crawford is an Africa American woman living in 1930's Florida who has been married three times and is believed to have killed one of her husbands. In the book she shares her journey and self discovery with her best friend.

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, by Frederick Douglass. This memoir by Frederick Douglass is set in early 19th century, and it recounts Douglass's life as a slave and his determination to become a free man. The narrative is one of the most influential works of literature to advocate the abolition of slavery.

Native Son, by Richard Wright. Bigger Thomas is a young African American man who is headed for jail after killing a young white woman in a brief moment of panic. Although not trying to justify Bigger's behavior, Wright lays bare the systemic inevitability behind the events. Ultimately, Bigger is seen as a product of the society that formed him.
